Abstract

Background: a significant proportion of information provided in clinical settings is forgotten or retained incorrectly, compromising disease management. Health communication is therefore central to nursing practice in empowering adults with chronic disease and their family members/caregivers. Objective: to map the existing scientific evidence on communication techniques used by nurses in empowering adults with chronic disease and their family members/caregivers. Methodology: a scoping review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and the PRISMA-ScR reporting guidelines, with searches performed in the MEDLINE and CINAHL databases. The protocol was registered in the Open Science Framework (OSF; DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/VNZFA). Study selection, data extraction and synthesis were carried out by two independent reviewers. Results: twelve studies were included, identifying communication techniques such as teach-back, partnership-building communication, chunk and check, solution-focused communication, and promotion of question use. Most studies did not clearly distinguish techniques directed at adults from those directed at family members/caregivers. Conclusion: this review mapped the communication techniques reported in the literature, highlighting gaps in their documentation and in the specification of target recipients. Further research should address their practical application and clarify target groups.
