Bachground: the aging of the population increases the probability of leading the elderly to situations of self-care dependency. Faced with this new condition, the family emerges as a resource, constituting themselves as family caregivers. Objectives: to characterize the reasons that lead to the assumption of the role of family caregiver; to determine the satisfaction with the exercise of the paper as well as the main sources of satisfaction; to determine their perceived self-efficacy to take care of and involvement in care. Methodology: mixed, descriptive and transversal study. As data collection instruments we used a semi-structured interview script, the Barthel Index and the Informal Caregiver Satisfaction Scale (CASI). Results: family caregivers generally have a high satisfaction in paper assumption. The main sources of satisfaction relate to the dependent person as the main beneficiary. However, difficulties have been identified in the performance of the role, mainly related to the provision of cares that require physical capacity and the management of emotions. Conclusion: nurses play a fundamental role in empowering family caregivers, producing a positive impact on the quality of life and care that the dependent person receives.
